UCC v Merlins Highlights

By Tushar (Merlins)
Oct 3, 2006
 Email article   Print article

Highlights:

- Toss won by UCC and they elected to field in their first 20/20 league
game this season

- Shantanu and Rashed opened the innings for the Merlins
- Both batsmen were in impressive form
- Rashed hit 15 off 13 balls and provided able support to Shantanu
before retiring out
- Shantanu who was promoted up the order scored a brisk 38 off 36 (3
FOURS) to give Merlins a stable start in a long time
- Sanjay Saksena showed some aggression before getting run out by
Tauseef trying to steal a quick single
- At the fall of Tushar and Amit, who score 7 and 6 respectively, came
Dmitri and Nagesh
- Both these batsmen helped take the score from 92 to 135 (44 runs) in a
matter of 3.3 overs (21 balls)
- Dimitri fell for a fine 25 off 11 deliveries (5 FOURS)
- Rizwan and Irfan soon followed scoring 3 and 1 respectively
- This brought Basit to the crease with 1.3 overs remaining
- Basit showed aggression from the get-go and scored 13 off the 7 balls
that he faced including a FOUR
- Merlins wrapped up for 163 for 8 wickets in 20 overs (helped by 30
wides and a NO Ball)

- UCC opened the innings with Tauseef and Hamid. Merlins were without a
regular keeper and hence Nagesh donned the gloves for the team
- Tushar opened the bowling and was effective right from the go, with
his short and rising deliveries cutting in from off into the batsmen's
hips and chest
- Third ball of the innings and Tauseef skied one that rose into his
chest only to offer Tushar a catch in his follow through at the batting
end
- Merlins smelled victory with the "Danger man" gone. There were
mini-celebrations all around
- However, Hamid and Abbas had other ideas
- Both these batsmen settled to unsettle the Merlins bowlers and scored
at a crisp 8 runs an over
- Amit Desai did not have a great first 2 overs and was sent for 17 runs
with 2 FOURS
- Shantanu, the change bowler was also sent for 18 runs in his 2 overs
(with 3 FOURS)
- At the end of 9th over, UCC were still in charge with score reading 70
for 1 (needing another 94 to win)
- Tushar effected a bowling change right before the drinks break and
brought Basit on in the form on spin
- The move paid off right away with Nagesh effecting a brilliant
stumping in the 4th ball getting Abbas out (20 off 22 with 1 FOUR and 1
SIX)
- However, Hamid kept his cool and got able support from Bawa and
Mohammad
- The running between the wickets from UCC was impressive and the energy
that they displayed did put the relatively older Merlins to shame
- UCC kept scoring at the reqd run rate and yet another dramatic finish
promised to be in the offing
- After the break, Nagesh got Bawa to hit one to midwicket for an
excellent field placement where Shantanu accepted the catch gladly
- However, Mohammad and Hamid played sensibly (Hamid now with a runner)
and took the score to 158 at the end of 19 overs
- Merlins have gotten into the habits of dramatic finish and this week
it was with the ball
- Last 3 overs 30 runs needed and Sanjay came on to bowl
- Sanjay got hit for 16 runs in his over (with 2 FOURS)
- Hamid got run out to a brilliant piece of fielding by Rizwan at square
leg who threw it to Nagesh, the keeper
- Now the target was gettable for UCC with 12 balls, 14 runs and 8
wickets remaining)
- Rizwan suggested that he come on to bowl the 19th over and Amit can
bowl the 20th. He made the right choice
- Rizwan gave 6 runs in his over with some excellent thinking-bowling
- Dramatic FINISH:
- Last over 8 runs needed, and Amit comes on to bowl
- Tushar goes up to him and says, "This is your chance to redeem
your bowler's tag" :-)
- Of course, the experience was too good for the young UCCites
- First ball, 1 run (UCC were running for anything and
everything now). The batsmen go for a second and run out by Nagesh/Amit
- Second ball, DOT ball
- 4 balls, 7 runs needed. It was a matter of connecting one ball
and the game would have been over
- Third ball, the ball goes back to Nagesh and the batsmen set
off for 1. The overthrow allows them to think of second and they
complete.
- 3 balls, 6 runs needed to win. The ball again goes behind to
Nagesh; same story; the batsmen set off for a single and Nagesh lobs the
ball back to Amit. However, Amit with his sharp thinking gets the
batsmen run out at the non striker end and another run out
- 2 balls, 5 needed to win. Again, the ball goes behind the
Nagesh. The batsmen COMPLETE a single this time, and Amit's attempt to
hit the stump is in vain, and they go for a second run and COMPLETE it.
- Last ball, 3 needed to win
- Again, the ball goes behind and the batsmen could not complete
a single this time as Nagesh walks up to the stump and effects a run out
- Amit never erred in his line and length and the variations
were too good for the UCC batsmen now.
They suddenly couldn't figure how to connect bat to the ball!!

Man of Match: Hamid Tirmizi for his 102 in 70 balls (11 FOURs)

Thanks!
Tushar (Merlins)
